Bidar: Bandeppa Kashempura, who is an MLA from Bidar South Assembly Constituency, demanded in the House that the amount of compensation given to farmers whose cattle have died due to foot and mouth disease and other skin diseases is very less and it should be increased to Rs. 50,000.

Participating in the second day’s proceedings of the Budget session at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Monday February 13, he was speaking with regard to cattle that died of foot and mouth disease and other diseases and demanded that the Government’s reply regarding the dead cattle be re-examined.

As many as 108 cattle have died in Bidar District and 4 in Bidar South. In fact, more cattle have died in the field. Rs 5,000 will be given to the deceased calf and Rs 20,000 to the cows. The reply stated that compensation is being given, he alleged.

A cow is not available for less than Rs. 1 lakh. Is this a pro-farmer Government, he questioned.

Minister Madhuswamy intervened and tried to defend the government. But the amount of compensation given by the government should be increased to at least Rs 50,000, adding that the compensation being given now was not fair. Many including Venkatrao Nadagouda, MLA from Sindhanur assembly constituency, echoed Bandeppa Khashempur’s words.

In reply, Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan said that no other State is providing any relief to the skin related disease. This is the first time I have started in Karnataka. Compensation of Rs 37 crore has been given. The rest is yet to be given. He said he would discuss with the Chief Minister to increase the amount of compensation.
