Karawar: Sea turtles released at Devbagh beach | Azad Times

Karawar: A total of 106 turtle young ones of Olive Ridley species were released into the sea at Devbagh beach in Karwar Taluk on Friday March 17. The turtle’s egg was preserved on Devbagh beach a few days ago.

The turtle hatchlings came out of these eggs and were brought out under the guidance of Karwar Forest Division, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Dr. B. S. Prashanth Kumar and Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Jayesh K. C.

So far, 30 nests including Devabagh, Mudaga, Majali, Bhavikeri, Harawada and Manjaguni in Karwar Division have been preserved as the time of the egg season is from November to March. Only the eggs of Olive Ridley sea turtles have been found off the coast of Karnataka which are protected under Section 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Since the eggs do not have the care of the mother turtle, they are preserved and released into the sea after hatching. In the last year, a total of 14 nests were found in Karwar Division. Since the inception of the Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Unit of the Forest Department, it has been engaged in the conservation of marine biodiversity.
