Karawar: Murudeshwara has been famous as a field of Lord Shiva since the time of Ramayana and the sites of Lord Shiva where Vaturupi Ganapa landed with the atma-lingam to lessen the worry of devotees.

The fact that a place where piece of the atmalinga of Lord Shiva has fallen on the Kandukagiri of Murdeshwara has now grown into a mythological shrine where lakhs of devotees have darshan of Lord Shiva on the day of Shivaratri alone.

In South Indian temples, the devotees are restricted from entering the sanctum sanctorum except for Lord Sri Mahabaleshwara Temple in Gokarna, devotees return from a distance with folded hands after performing poojas and punaskars to the deity.

Even in Murdeshwara, which is a part of Gokarna, devotees are not allowed to touch and worship Lord. Knowing this, Dr. R. N. Shetty came up with a plan to give emotional devotees an opportunity to touch and worship. Lord Sri Sundara Rameshwara Temple is a temple built as per his resolve. The fact that devotees here have the opportunity to touch and worship Lord Sri Sundara Rameshwara and pray for their wishes is an example of his farsightedness.
