Mangaluru: We have heard of people contesting elections in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar despite being in jail. We have never heard of such a practice in the South, especially in Karnataka. However, in this election, the SDPI has fielded a jailed man as its candidate for Puttur Constituency.
Shafi Bellare, the prime accused in the Praveen Nettaru murder case, who was arrested by the NIA for seditious activities and jailed, has been declared as its candidate.
The murder of BJP Worker Praveen Nettaru created such a stir that the PFI itself was banned for several murders. NIA officials had arrested many leaders of SDPI and PFI in the case.
Now, the SDPI has fielded the accused in the Praveen murder case in Puttur. SDPI State President Abdul Majeed announced that Shafi Bellare, who was the State Secretary of the SDPI, would be our candidate. He made the announcement at an SDPI conference held in Puttur two days ago.
After all, Shafi Bellare was earlier the State Secretary of the SDPI. Last time, when the Legislative Council elections were held, the SDPI had fielded same person. However, the NIA officials’ investigation revealed that he had sketched the murder and was arrested.
Shafi Bellare, who is currently in NIA custody, will contest from jail, thereby challenging the Government and the legal system.
