Sanath Jayasuriya thanks India and PM Modi for assistance amid economic crisis


Colombo: Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya sought India’s support in the hours of crisis the island nation is facing. Jayasuriya stated that if the problem is unaddressed that will snowball into a disaster. 

Explaining the current scenario, Jayasuriya said: “Unfortunately, the people are going through this situation. They cannot survive like this and have started to protest. There is a shortage of gas and no electricity supply for hours. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya on the current situation in the country.”

The cricketer blamed the incumbent government for the unfolding crisis.

“People have started to come out and protest to show the Sri Lankan government that they are suffering. If relevant people don’t address this properly, it will turn into a disaster. At the moment the responsibility will go to the present government.”

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government for aid and assistance during the crisis.

“As a neighbour and a big brother of our country, India has always helped us. We’re grateful to the Indian government and PM Narendra Modi. For us, it is not easy to survive because of the current scenario. We hope to come out from this with the help of India and other countries.”

Meanwhile, India has sent 40,000 MT of diesel, and 36,000 MT of Petrol to Sri Lanka under the $500 million fuel Line of credit. This is the 5th consignment of fuel since March to Sri Lanka by the Indian Government.

Protesters are demanding the removal of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after the worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948.
