Udupi: Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parashottam Rupala has said that the fisheries sector in the Country will be treated as a priority sector and efforts will be taken to develop it holistically.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Sagara Parikrama programme held at Malpe Fishing Harbour here on Sunday March 19. “A separate Ministry of Fisheries has been set up to understand the problems of fishermen and various programmes have been implemented for the development of fishermen. Through Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana for the development of fisheries sector at a cost of Rs 20,050 Crore has been released,” he said.

He said that through the Sagar Parikrama Project, the aim is to meet the fishermen of all the fishing harbours within the 8000 km coastline of the Country and make them aware of the fisheries schemes of the Centre, listen to their problems and provide them proper redressal.

He already visited Karwar Port in the State and listened to the problems of the local fishermen and action will be taken to look into the demands made by the fishermen of the Udupi District.
