Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will soon start allowing users to update the information on their Aadhar cards that were issued 10 years ago. According to reports from the Press Information Bureau of the Government of India, residents who had their Aadhaar number given ten years ago and hadn’t updated since then are encouraged to have their documents updated.

However, there are misleading reports that updating Aadhar has been made mandatory.

“Aadhaar number holders may, on completion of every 10 years from the date of enrolment for Aadhaar, update their supporting documents in Aadhaar, at least once, by submitting Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents as specified under Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulation 10 hereinabove, so as to ensure continued accuracy of their information in the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR), in such manner as may be specified by the Authority from time to time,” stated a notification dated November 9.

The notification clearly states that Aadhar holder ‘may’ update their Aadhar details on completion of 10 years. UIDAI has stated that people are encouraged to keep their documents as Aadhaar number is being used for availing several government schemes and services. “Keeping the documents in Aadhaar updated helps in ease of living, better service delivery, and enables accurate authentication. UIDAI has always encouraged residents to keep their documents updated, and the gazette notification is another step in that direction,” stated a PIB release on November 10.
